| Broodmare Extraordnaire! Impulse came into our lives last year when we leased her for a 2003 baby. Impulse is owned my Jennifer Kamentz of Rohan Arabians. She is a beautiful, gentle soul who loves children and people of all ages. My youngest niece, Kirstyn, (the five year old who is terrified of all creatures bigger than her) loves to hug Impulse's legs and head while Impulse is eating. Impulse apparently has decided that such homage is her due and handles it all with a great deal of aplomb. I've decided that any mare that can help my niece get over her fears is a blessing and a God send. Impulse has been a little out of place on our farm as our two other horses, Aurora and Chakotay, are big, black drafts. It's been more than a little comical to see the extremes of breeds represented in our pasture this winter. The drafts, fat and tall, are completely oblivious to the weather. It was common to see them with ice sickles hanging from body mane and tail. Little, pregnant Impulse needed to be sheeted at the first sign of rain and blanketed every time the temperature dropped below 40 degrees F. She was miserable, but seemed somewhat stoic about the whole thing. Of course the drafts picked on her something terrible, but Impulse figured things out quickly, and started giving as good as she got (You go, girl!). She did seemed greatly relieved when we finally got her little paddock completed so she could have the hay, feed and water to herself without needing Rondell or me to intervene. We had to separate Impulse when we fed, otherwise the drafts would steal her grain (the pigs!) She spent the last few months of her pregnancy relaxing in the sun, strolling through our yard, and making the occasional ugly face at the drafts who kept giving her a hard time through the fence. Then, on April 14, 2003 at 3:40 am Impulse delivered her foal Ila of Rohan. Ila is a beautiful, long legged filly who should end up a gray just like her mother. Impulse will go back to Jenny's farm when we wean Ila. Sometime between now and then Impulse will be bred back to AA Manhattan for another beautiful baby, and I will start training her to ride. Impulse is currently owned by Crystal Velanova, if you would like to find out more about this lovely mare, please feel free to contact me and I'll put you in touch with her owner. Impulse is the mother of several halter and performance champions including RH Ishmael, owned by Chris and Lea Hehman, RH Israel owned by Will and Debbie Hanley. Mel (4/17/2003) |
